Brian Harris
Outdoor Leadership Facilitator
Bio
Brian has a love for all things outdoors, whether out on the trail backpacking or at the beach longboard surfing, he has a deep love for nature and an understanding of its importance to the human experience. A former Boy Scout, he earned the much coveted Eagle Scout Award in 1991.
He is a graduate of Lake Wales High School class of 1992. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Arts and Elementary Education from Warner University in 1996. While attending Warner University in Lake Wales FL he served as the Aquatics Director of the Florida Lions Camp, which served youth of varying exceptionalities. It was this experience which led him to pursue a calling in education.
He has taught numerous subject areas at the middle school level, starting at Lake Alfred Middle School and later at McLaughlin Middle School. At McLaughlin he developed a leadership curriculum which would serve the students to develop their leadership and teamwork skills with an approach he had discovered called adventure based experiential learning. During this time he honed his skills as a facilitator inside the classroom as well as at nights and weekends running team building workshops for local groups and organizations.
Upon leaving McLaughlin he joined the FALLS Adventure, a non-profit adventure based experiential learning company out of Lakeland Florida. The mission of this company was to use adventure and experiential learning to help groups, families and individuals to grow personally. During his stint as Lead Facilitator at FALLS Adventure Brian gained experience running and maintaining High Ropes Facilities. He ran climbing clubs, therapeutic programs and countless workshops for private groups and corporate organizations.
He now serves as Outdoor Leadership Facilitator at Edward W. Bok Academy in Lake Wales. It is here that his love for the outdoors has seemed to come full circle giving him the opportunity to teach topics like knot tying, fire starting and survival skills while meshing them with vital leadership and teamwork strategies. The class also utilizes a low and high ropes course on campus and is a perfect fit for him to again utilize an adventure based experiential learning approach to his teaching.
Brian is a husband and father. He and his wife Amy reside in Babson Park FL with their children River and Ruby. He has hiked many miles on sections of the Appalachian Trail, is an avid surfer and spends any free time exploring the natural heritage of Florida including springs, rivers and lakes. He considers it an honor to be able to share this love of nature and learning with all Bok Knights.
